I'm taking a math proficiency exam this morning for college. (arithmatic actually). I'm 60 years old and wish Jason had been my math teacher. 15 minutes after reading the material...I get it! I'll let you know how I do.

Just for the record, 5 is NOT 17% of 85. It's 5.882%.

It's a lot easier than all that. Just multiply the two numbers: 36 x 25 = 900. move the decimal over two spots and NINE. This method also gives you the answer to problems like: what percent of 85 is 5? Just divide 85 by 5 to get 17. 17 x 5 = 85. Also 5 is what percent of 85? 17 (you knew that!) So 4 answers from one method.
