If you’ve been listening to The Public Speaker podcast for a while, you know by now that I consider networking to be one of the most important factors of success.

No matter how talented or smart you are, you still need a network of people who can help you find opportunities, give you advice, and offer support and encouragement.

I recently spoke with Jared Easley, author of Podcasting Good to Great: How to Grow Your Audience Through Collaboration, and he shared some great advice to help you expand your network from ordinary to extraordinary.

First, Jared says to be the “noticer.” Try to make what you’re doing about other people. Look for opportunities to notice other people and promote their skills and abilities. That’ll often cause them to reciprocate. Building relationships where people support and promote each other is like building an army.

I have a friend, a business owner herself, who does this really well. She started a Facebook group in her town where people can promote their business and offer recommendations for other businesses. She also started an informal, monthly coffee group for people in her town who want to network with other business owners. The result? People she’s “noticed’ have reciprocated and her photography business is busier than it’s ever been.

Jared’s second piece of advice is to collaborate on projects. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Try to align yourself with people who share similar ideas and values, but with different strengths and experiences. Combining forces can move your work from ordinary to extraordinary.
